The enemy is defeated.

David defeats Goliath. This is not only a story about David and Goliath. It is about the Israelites and the Philistines. It is about ‘God’ and the ‘gods’(1 Samuel 17:43, 46). Victory comes from the Lord. It is given by grace. It is received by faith (47). Notice the contrast between the attitude of Saul – unbelief -and the attitude of David – faith (1 Samuel 17:33, 37). Unbelief is all around us. Don’t be pulled into it. Don’t forget God. Remember what He has done for you and thank Him that He will not fail you now (1 Samuel 17:37). Put off the armour provided by men. ‘Put on the whole armour of God’(1 Samuel 17:38-40; Ephesians 6:11). We will not win the victory if we fight in our own strength. We must draw our strength from the Lord. He helps us. We are ‘strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man’(Psalm 121:2; Psalm 124:8; Ephesians 3:16).

We have the victory in Christ.

‘I will give thanks to the Lord…’(Psalm 9:1-2). The enemy is defeated (Psalm 9:3-6). ‘The Lord sits enthroned for ever’(Psalm 9:7). ‘The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble’(Psalm 9:9). What an encouraging Psalm this is: We have the victory in Christ. Nevertheless, it is not easy when we face determined opposition from the enemies of Christ and His Gospel: ‘Behold what I suffer from those that hate me’(Psalm 9:13). In this situation, we must call upon the Lord: ‘Arise, O Lord! Let not man prevail’(Psalm 9:19). Though the conflict is raging all around, we must – taking our stand in Christ – declare God’s praises and rejoice in His salvation (Psalm 9:14). ‘The Lord dwells in Zion’(Psalm 9:11): ‘Blest inhabitants of Zion, Washed in the Redeemer’s blood’, may we always say, ‘Let the world deride or pity, I will glory in Thy Name.’

Pass the message on.

There are some things that are worth repeating! The story of God’s amazing grace is worth repeating over and over again – ‘Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and He delivered them from their distress’(Psalm 107:6, 13, 19, 28). The call to praise the Lord is also something we need to hear again and again – ‘Let them give thanks to the Lord for His unfailing love and His wonderful deeds for men’(Psalm 107:8, 15, 21, 31). Let us ‘consider the great love of the Lord.’ Let us ‘give thanks to the Lord’ (Psalm 107:43, 1). ‘The great love of God is revealed in the Son, who came to this earth to redeem every one. That love, like a stream flowing clear to the sea, makes clean every heart that from sin would be free… It’s yours, it is ours, O how lavishly given! The pearl of great price, and the treasure of heaven!’

On Wednesday 29th April, I was inducted to my new charge – St. Andrew’s Church, Dumbarton. It was a memorable evening. It was encouraging to have a number of people from Darvel with us for the evening. We also appreciated the presence of some other members of the Presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock. We were in Darvel for almost eight years. As I looked back over my ministry in Darvel, I emphasized the importance of giving glory to God. Anything good that has come from my ministry has come from the Lord. It is His doing. We look back, and we say, “Our help is in the Name of the Lord” (Psalm 124:8). We look back, and we say, “Not to us, O Lord, not to us, but to Your Name be the glory” (Psalm 115:1).

I now look back on my ministry at Darvel. I recall the final series of sermons on Mark’s Gospel. I remember Easter Sunday. I remember the final message on Christ’s resurrection, especially the wonderful words, “and Peter” (Mark 16:7). I recall inviting the people to “make it personal”, asking them to put their own name into John 3:16 and Romans 10:9.

I encouraged the people to give thanks to God for the greatest gift of all – our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.

I am no longer living in Darvel. I am no longer a member of the Presbytery of Irvine and Kilmarnock. Through the Internet, my ministry doesn’t need to become a thing of the past. Early on in my ministry, I provided the people at Darvel with Bible Reading Notes, covering the whole Bible. These notes, as well as the “Sermons on Luke’s Gospel” (a response to a recommendation from the “Church Without Walls” Report), can be found at http://christinallthescriptures.blogspot.com. The “Church Without Walls” sermons can also be found here at this website - http://ikpresbytery.wordpress.com. Here, at this website, you can also find another series of sermons, entitled, “A Statement of Christian Faith” (preached in Dunfermline, 1990-1991). If you read my notes and sermons, you can leave a comment. I’d be pleased to hear from you. If you would like to know a bit more about my new congregation, you can visit the website – http://standrewsdumbarton.co.uk.

—–

Now that I’ve left Irvine and Kilmarnock Presbytery, I hope that someone else will see that the website will get updated with new articles which will be a blessing to others. Leave a comment if you’re interested in keeping the website up-to-date with new articles.

The ministry is not about what I say to you. It’s about what God says to all of us. The third emphasizes the Spirit. The ministry is not about the personality of the preacher. It’s about the presence of the Spirit. My prayer for each of you is that your faith will be centred on the Saviour, grounded in the Scriptures and empowered by the Spirit.

Here, we read about ‘the Valley of Vision’ (1, 5). The Lord Himself is to be our Vision: ‘Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art, Thou my best thought, by day or by night, waking or sleeping Thy presence my light’ (Church Hymnary, 87). Down in the valley, the mountain-top experience seems a long way off. What are we to do when everything seems to be hard-going? When there seems to be no way out of the valley, no way back to the mountain-top, we must keep on ‘looking to Jesus’ (Hebrews 12:1-2). In the ‘valley’, we must learn to say, ‘My goal is God Himself, not joy nor peace, nor even blessing, but Himself, my God’. Let your ‘valley’ become your ‘valley of vision’, the place where you are learning to ‘turn your eyes upon Jesus’ (Mission Praise, 470,712).

These are some thoughts from near the end of one ministry and near the beginning of another ministry. May they be a special word of encouragement who are presently praying that God will provide them with the new minister He is planning to bring to them.

—–

In the Irvine Valley, we are deeply aware of the beauty of God’s creation. We look up to the hills, and we catch a glimpse of God’s glory. We look up to the hills, and we say, “My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth” (Psalm 121:1-2). At the beginning of my ministry in Darvel, I drew attention to the words of 2 Peter 3:18 – “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.”

Recently, I came across an inspiring poem, which brings together these two thoughts – “living in the valley” and “growing in Christ.” The poem is entitled “It’s in the valleys I grow.” It was written by a lady called Jane Eggleston. I thought I would share it with you for your encouragement.

“Sometimes life seems hard to bear, full of sorrow, trouble and woe
It’s then I have to remember that it’s in the valleys I grow.
If I always stayed on the mountain top and never experienced pain,

I would never appreciate God’s love and would be living in vain.
I have so much to learn and my growth is very slow,
Sometimes I need the mountain tops, but it’s in the valleys I grow.
I do not always understand why things happen as they do,
But I am very sure of one thing. My Lord will see me through.
My little valleys are nothing when I picture Christ on the cross
He went through the valley of death; His victory was Satan’s loss.
Forgive me Lord, for complaining when I’m feeling so very low.
Just give me a gentle reminder that it’s in the valleys I grow.
Continue to strengthen me, Lord and use my life each day
To share your love with others and help them find their way.
Thank you for valleys, Lord, for this one thing I know:
The mountain tops are glorious, but it’s in the valleys I grow!”

I have now begun a new ministry at St. Andrew’s, Dumbarton. It’s a parish, set on a hillside, which overlooks Dumbarton, the River Clyde and the Leven Valley. The congregation had been in its own “valley” – the valley of a long vacancy! Now, they have a new minister. In Darvel, the people are wondering what the future holds for them. The congregation is at a crossroads. They must make important decisions – about the kind of people they are going to be, about the kind of Church they will be, about the kind of witness they will bring to the people of their parish.

In the final weeks of my ministry, I encouraged the congregation at Darvel to move forward with a real love for Jesus. These final weeks of my ministry were very important. I emphasized that our response to the Word of God, during these weeks, shapes the way in which we move on into the future. I stated that the final weeks of my ministry can be the best weeks of this ministry – if each of us learns to pray, “Lord, help me to be ‘the best that I can be for truth and righteousness and Thee’ (Church Hymnary, 448).” I emphasized that the Valley doesn’t need to be a place of “sorrow, trouble and woe.” It can be the place of growth, the place of strengthening, the place of victory. I pointed out that each one must decide what the Valley will be. Each of us must decide what we will be. I encouraged the people to put the past behind us. I said to them, “As we look forward to new beginnings, may God help us to make a new beginning right now. May He help us to say, with the Apostle Paul, “I press on toward the goal of the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” ((Philippians 3:14).”

Now that I’ve left Irvine and Kilmarnock Presbytery, I hope that someone else will see that the website will get updated with new articles which will be a blessing to others. Leave a comment if you’re interested in keeping the website up-to-date with new articles.
